When we think of feminist poetry, we think of Adrienne Rich, one of the most influential poets of the past century, not to mention one of the most important feminist poets. Had she not passed away earlier this year, today would have been Rich’s 83rd birthday, so to celebrate her life, we’ve put together a list of feminist poets still living and continuing her legacy.

After a few months of interchangeable summer festival lineup announcements featuring ’90s alt-rock reunions and trendy indie acts, it’s always refreshing to hear what traveling hip-hop celebration Rock the Bells is planning — and this year’s just-released roster doesn’t disappoint. The biggest news, as far as we’re concerned, is the return of Missy Elliott, who will appear alongside longtime collaborator Timbaland as “very special guests.” Also on the agenda is Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s 20th anniversary reunion, for which they’ll play their classic 1995 album E.

Give the man some wooden pins, a few pairs of sunglasses, and the right lighting, and you won’t believe what Swedish photographer Philip Karlberg is capable of. “A couple of months ago I came up with an idea I have had in mind for years,” he says of his fantastic Pin Art project. “I just did not know what I could use it for.

Is your subculture hazardous to your health? Although our distaste for the emo aesthetic is fairly minor, in Iraq or Mexico , dressing like a member of My Chemical Romance is liable to get you a beating (or worse)

Between Newsweek ‘s proud proclamation that Barack Obama is America’s “first gay president” and Jay-Z rushing to co-sign the president’s support of same-sex marriage, it’s been a big week for the LGBT rights movement in pop culture. And now, in another sign of just how far we’ve come, Ellen DeGeneres — who, less than 15 years ago, introduced the first gay lead character on primetime and soon after saw her show canceled — has been named this year’s recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Over the past several years, DeGeneres has won the hearts of Middle America as host of the wildly successful Ellen DeGeneres Show , in addition to her brief stint as an American Idol judge.

While perusing today’s new DVD releases, your film editor was nearly prompted to a coffee spit take by one particular title: Warner Archive’s release of, and I quote, “ Emily’s Reasons Why Not : The Complete Series .” You see, I remember Emily’s , ABC’s well-publicized 2006 Heather Graham sitcom that aired exactly one time before being unceremoniously yanked from the air.

Recently,  The Rumpus  dug up a great article from a 1998 edition of the LA Times , wherein Saul Bellow describes living with Ralph Ellison in a grand old house in upstate New York. Inspired by this pairing, we decided to poke around to try and find out which other famous writers have lived together, whether before they became famous, while scribbling away, or as established authors living the high life. Just to be clear — we’re not counting famous literary couples (or at least not constant ones, anyway). That’d just be too easy.

Is there anything more breathtaking than a dancer’s graceful body mid-pose? Berlin-based Chilean mixed media artist Jose Romussi — whose lovely embroidered works we spotted over on My Modern Met — takes vintage black and white photos of ballerinas and embellishes their already elaborate costumes with colorful thread stitching. The result is fun and playful, breathing new life into images that have been frozen in time for decades.

Photographer Alison Scarpulla, whose work we recently spotted over at  Lost at E Minor , takes gorgeous, strange photographs out in the woods and turns them into landscapes bristling with enchantments, and maybe just a little bit of the occult. Scarpulla shuns Photoshop and other digital processes, but rather gets her effects through a mystical alchemy of expired film, lenses smeared with water or dirt, and a tradition of dipping the negatives in acid and wine and blowing smoke on them. The results are beautiful, and her images feel like dark Shakespearean fairy tales, infused, both in subject and tone, with a sense of natural magic and poetry. Click through to see some of our favorites from her portfolio, and then be sure to head over to Scarpulla’s website for even more of her glorious photography.
